can I freeze sour cream to perserve it?

I can rarely find sour cream where I live and so when I find it I buy it even if I don’t plan on using it. So can I freeze it in order to use it later?

I have never tried to freeze sour cream by itself but I have frozen it in cooked dishes and it has been fine. I know you can freeze milk, cream and yogurt so I do not see why you cannot freeze sour cream – just make sure that you allow it to thaw slowly in the refrigerator and to stir it thoroughly before you use is as it may separate when it thaws.

Can you freeze sour cream?

You can freeze almost anything; you just may not like it when it thaws. Sour cream is a case in point.

Sour cream breaks down and separates when frozen and thawed. You can stir it back together, but it won’t have the texture you expect if you put a dollop on your baked potato or tortilla, or use it in a dressing or dip.

I’ve frozen it successfully in prepared dishes.

But, the texture of sour cream and yogurt will break down when frozen straight from the carton. The product is edible but the creamy texture will be lost. Even stirred it’s much more liquid. I’ve done this as a last resort…frozen it…rather that throw it out. I’ve used it in cooking. Frozen and thawed sour cream isn’t something you’d want on your baked potato.
