Can Chewing Sunflower Seeds Damage my Teeth?

Recently I became addicted to sunflower seeds. Popping them in, hulling them with my teeth, eating the seed, and spitting the husk. Good stuff.

But I was wondering if doing this can damage my teeth. On one hand I want to say ‘yes’ because of the simple fact that it is food, after all, and can dirty my teeth just like anything else.

But then I also think ‘no’ and that it might even have the opposite affect since the rough husks may possibly scrape tarter or cavity causing susbtances from my teeth.

Your thoughts??

It’s not very likely… but there’s always that slim chance that you’ll get a really tough seed and the hull will chip a tooth. I’ve certainly bitten down on some hard ones before (I finally quit buy them, and only get the sunflower kernels now, because I got tired of it).

Chewing sunflower seeds provide a good source of dietary fiber, protein and vitamin E. They also provide important minerals such as magnesium and selenium. Vitamins and minerals are vital to our health and longevity. Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant which helps protect cells from damage by free radicals, as well as help prevent blood clots. Also, remember that chewing sunflower seeds prevent halitosis (bad breath); the seeds cannot damage your teeth, but continue to use the other measures to keep your teeth white and healthy.
