Can cats drink plain soy or rice milk?

My cats love milk but I don’t like giving them much. I drink soy and rice milk for lactose problems can they drink that, even a kitten? I’d get the stuff they make for cats but the stuff I saw it just as much as the soy milk and I’d assume soy would be better for them then the stuff thats been on the shelf for ages.
Milk is a rare treat fot them.

Petsmart sells this stuff that is milk for cats. I can’t remember the name of it, but I believe it is in a purple package. They are like juice box size and you get several.

I would not recommend feeding your cat soy milk in place of fresh water or as the major ingredient in her diet. However, if your cat likes a taste of soy milk as an occasional treat, it shouldn’t cause her any harm—just keep the portion small.

In general, treats should make up no more than 5 to 10 percent of your pet’s daily caloric intake. The rest of her calories should come from a high-quality, nutritionally complete cat food. It’s also important to remember that pets’ digestive systems can be very sensitive, and unfamiliar foods can cause digestive upset. If you notice your cat having problems as a result of the soy milk, we would recommend that you stop feeding it to her.

I don’t think it would really hurt them..

But I wouldn’t give them too much..

For unweaned kittens (4 weeks and under) NO, nothing is acceptable besides a mamma cat’s milk or KMR (kitten milk replacement).. Soy, rice milk would not have the proper nutrition that they need. Just like vitamin D whole milk cannot take the place of formula for an infant.. infant formula is designed to have the proper nutrition, to be as close to breast milk as possible. LIkewise, KMR (which can be found at pet stores and some wal-marts) is designed to have the nutrition a kitten needs, and be similar to the milk produced by lactating cats. Soy milk or rice milk was NOT created to have the nutrition a baby kitten needs. It was designed so vegans or lactose-intolerant people would have something healthy to put on their cheerios.

You are rights, cats are lactose intolerant.. giving a cat too much dairy (real milk, from cows) can cause diarreah, which can be life-threatening in a young kitten..

So a weaned kitten or cat, it wouldn’t HURT them to have a few sips of soy/rice milk once in awhile

but a baby kitten who still needs milk needs a mama cat or KMR.. PERIOD..

Any weaned cat/kitten should eat mostly cat or kitten chow..

What soccer angel said was correct, that is the advice given to someone by the ASPCA.

Fresh water is the best but every cat likes a litle treat now and again, I agree that giving them your fresh soy milk is most probably better than the cartons of cat milk.
Cows milk can cause problems for them.

Once a cat is weaned, milk should not be fed to them. This is what my vet said. My cat had VERY bad diarrhea and I couldn’t figure out why. I brought him to the vet and he said stop feeding milk. Cats should only drink water after being weaned.

you can buy specially formulated milk just for cats at petco and petsmart.
