Any online seed catalog, at least from the United States, will have pictures of butternut squash.
It grows on a vine that can get 10-12 feet long, and the squashes themselves grow along the stem of the vine. The vine will have two kinds of blossoms, male and female. The female blossoms will have a slight bulge at the base of the flower that can develop into a squash if it is fertilized; the male blossoms look the same but do not have the bulge at the base.
I plant my squash seeds outside in the spring here in Michigan, and I have good, ripe squash about October.
Try the above for some tips on growing squash, and there is a pretty good picture of a vine just starting to grow.

Hey The One,

It is a squash. You grow it like a pumbkin, or other squash. Big leaves grow out of the plants root stalk at the center, and flower stalks come off – the floweres disappear off the end of the squash. Easy to grow.

the leaves on the squash will look similar to a cucumber plant when it comes up they are very easy to grow if you ever raised zucchini squash the plant will look the same also the fruit will come after the large blossoms appear mostly coming out from the base of the plant very good baked also may be used in a apple bake by using 1/3 apples 2/3 squash made like apple cobbler

Try the Thompson and Morgan website for pics and info. With your relatively cool conditions in Wales, at least they are for many Winter squash the greenhouse is probably a good idea. I hope you have a compact variety though. Some can grow very large vines. The plants will produce both male and female flowers along the vines.
