Broken lower parakeet beak–what to do?

My parakeet’s lower beak broke almost clear off. She hasn’t been eating, except for a small amount of millet and water.

She’s old, but stubborn as hell. I don’t want to put her to sleep, and I don’t want to her to starve either, the two suggestions the vet had. No vet around here can treat her.

My question is, is there any way I could make it easier for her to eat? Any foods she’d have an easy time eating? I know beaks grow back, but how long does it take? Is it cruel to try to keep her alive? -Would- it be better to have the vet put her to sleep?

Thanks much for any advice you have.

No just go ask him to fix it in surgery or something

take to an expierenced avian vet right away! they can survive like this but will need a special diet and care.

youll have to feed her by hand as if she was a chick again .look for how to feed chicks of parakets and cockatils.

what about baby bird food. isnt it in a formula so you can feed it to her and she wont have to use her beak

maybe you can try an eye dropper, try calling a zoo .im sure they have dealt with kind of thing. good luck

A vet or duct tape.

This type of break would be painful and is very serious.
Only surgery ( very costly, but call and talk with a certified avian vet.)

I am very surprised this bird can and is eating millet spray – and drinking water if mandable is broken in half. he is a determined and strong little guy.

Search online for different diets of foods to make him/her.
Think Health and ease of swallowing. Will need to be spoon fed several times daily. You do this by offering the tip of the spoon filled with alittle bit of mashed, runny, warm foods. Don’t try to force the bird, let him take what he knows he can swallow from the tip of the spoon you hold to him.

For starter’s, you can buy a jar of Organic ( no preservitives and no sugar) Apple Sauce, cooked and warm water added to be abit runny oatmeal, cooked and mashed and cooled vegetables -even frozen mixed vegatables will work, might add drops of water to he can eat it.

Soak over night some beans, pinto, lima, white navy beans.
Next morning drain and add fresh water and boil til almost soft, then ass small amount of brown rice and cook together until rice is soft, drain and cool. Mash with a fork, add water to make it a tad bit runny and feed. * Adding a hard boiled egg ( boil 15 mins. cool and remove shell ) mash well and be sure there is some water or other moisture for ease of swallowing – -Do Not por into the beak, let the bird use the tip of his top beak to take what he wants, go Slow.

Search online for bird sites and read. birdtalk.com is a good one
