Bird feeders and seed?

I’m growing a vegetable garden and for insect control I’m trying to attract birds to my back yard. I have a wooden and glass bird feeder but I don’t think it’s enough. I’ve heard about all those kids projects like using bread and peanut butter or lard but are there ways to make bird feeders that don’t look so child like?
Also what type of bird seed should I use? I found 2 kinds at the store. One is sunflower seeds. The other it says finch food it’s a bunch of tiny seeds.

Bird feeders come in hundreds of shapes and sizes. I would start with a cheaper model and see what the birds prefer.
As far as seeds go, I found that black oil seeds attract the most birds to my feeders. I think they are a type of sunflower seed. I buy mine in Wal-mart

i use blkj oily sunflower seeds, suet from the big box store, and a bird bath,,thats it,,,a simple open tray on a pole is all u need, fill as needed,,,,i live in no .wisconsin and at this min i have aprox 50-75 birds on my feeder, mostly red poles

We feed 3 different types of seed. Black Oil Sunflower seeds are what a lot of the birds really like. Sparrows, cardinals, titmice, chickadees to name a few. We also feed some of the regular mixture you can buy in the stores. It has millet, sunflower seed, peanut hearts and a whole bunch of others. Some of the small birds prefer that. And the 3rd one is optional, Niger or thistle seed. We feed it because we like the finches and pine siskins that love the stuff.

And don’t get excited if the pigeons find the seeds that the other throw on the ground. They’ll come in and clean it up and keep you from having a lot of seeds sprouting and a lot of time pulling the sprouts up. They are also excellent at eating bugs! I laugh at them some mornings when they are fanned out in a line going down through the yard, flushing and eating bugs. Looks like they’re putting on a deer drive! And they are not dirty at all!
