Best guiltless snack?
What is your favorite munching snack that is healthy and preferrably sugar-free/fat-free? I’m on a diet and so far, i’m into the edemame beans, craisins (dried cranberries), baby carrots, cherry tomatoes, air popped popcorn etc… anyone know anything else creative?
to answer your question, “pythia”… actually, you are right: craisins ARE high in sugar. that’s one of the downside to this high in dietary fiber snack. but i’m a performer (dance and sing) and i need the sugar every once in a while and when i want sugar, that’s how i get it instead of candy bars. thanks for asking!

I love these granola bars with fruit and nuts by Nature Valley.
pretzels, celery sticks (cheat with a little low-fat ranch dip, if you like), fruits (any kind–except bananas, which are high in sugar, I personally love pomegranates) shrimp cocktail, cucumber slices are very refreshing
i like the manderine oranges that come in a pack of 4 or 6 and they r precut and peeled open pour the juice off and eat.
Cut up apple pieces with peanut butter. The majority of this snack is just apple but you are getting a satisying sweet taste from the peanut butter, and the peanut butter is great for protein.
dried fish sticks. dried seafoods. they taste good but aren’t fatty. generally seafood is much healthier than other stuff.
Lots of shredded cabbage with a little shredded carrot and a hint of mayonnaise (low-fat) and a generous dash of black pepper and a pinch of salt … it you are in a zesty mood, add a splash of vinegar to it … toss well and dig in.
lots of munch and crunch and very filling!
Not fat but maybe salty! Pop-corn, and Pretels?!
Oh, good luck, Annie! Sounds like you eat healthy. Mine is bananas. I allow myself all the bananas I want. They are very satisfying, and require NO prep. (I cook dinner every night, so I really need easy snacks.)
This year, the organic pears are exceptionally good, too. I’ve never had better. (It seems like they usually go bad before they are ripe . . . but not this year. They are fantastic.) All the varieties of apples are good, too, but not as good as last year. Last year I tried about 8 or 9 varieties, for fun. (Did you know that apples are related to roses? I would tell myself I was eating a bouquet.)
If you have time, live in a cold part of the country, and want to turn down the furnace, bake some carnival acorn squash. It takes about 2 hours in a 375 degree oven, and they are so delicious and smell so great that they do not need brown sugar, cinnamon, or any of that. Great way to warm up the house, too.
Are craisins low in sugar? I’ve avoided them, thinking that they are rather high. Let us know! Thanks!
celery sticks and low fat peanut butter – or replace the peanut butter with a good low fat dip. Grapes are the bomb as well, and bloody good for you!
Try a veggie plate with tabasco sauce it’s almost like a good V8 juice without all the salt
Depends what your diet is and what you’re trying to achieve. Good guilt-free snacks are: fruit (try lychees, rambutan, coconut juice (very nutritious), mangosteen; a mix of pepitas/sesame seeds/sunflower seeds (essential fatty acids); you should also be able to eat as much cucumber/celery/lettuce as you like (very high water content).
Important note though when dieting – make sure you are consuming enough calories to activate your metabolism. Breakfast really is the most important meal of the day and will kickstart your metabolism for the day. Try to reduce carbs (not eliminate); increase water intake (important); balance your intake of protein and carbs. Protein will balance your blood sugar levels and curb your hunger longer. Best to have protein for breakfast rather than a carb breakfast (ie yoghurt and fruit; eggs and veg). Good luck!
mixed nuts. rice cakes.
