Baby Jar food vs. Pureed Food?
I’m a first time mom, and my parents are being extremely bothersome and nagging me, saying that my 6 month old is “skinny” and needs to be as fat and heavy as possible. Since I heard Beechnut is a very good brand, I’ve been feeding him 3 times a day with Beechnuts goodmorning cereal, DHA+ Rice with Bananas & Raspberries Cereal, and then Good Evening whole wheat with Raisins…. and one jar food with one of the meals. I also planned on buying stage 2 foods this week.
I know its cheaper making food than buying it, but my concern is not the money.
I want to know which is better? Should I blend actual rice and potatos for my baby? And if so, what are some good food to blend for my “skinny” baby?? or should i just continue him on jar food??

Whats your Dr say? Who cares about your family as long as the Dr says your baby is healthy!
However, My baby started to stop gaining so much when I fed him more baby food and less formula.. so maybe try giving your baby more formula and less food. Formula is more fatning.
my son was very thin and kept getting sick. We gave him mashed avocado. Avocado is high in healthy fat. He loved it and did gain a little bit of weight but he is still thin and he eats alot.
The baby does not need to be fat. healthy but not heavy!
My mother always says I should feed my son more because he is skinny. Well, he is just fine for his height. He’s not a chubby baby. The doctor says he is perfect. I feed my son all he needs and he doesn’t need to get “fat”. As long as he is thriving, as in gaining the amount of weight he needs to grow, then he is fine. Ask the pediatrician if he is fine, not your parents or friends. It was a different world for your parents and fat babies were considered healthy ones. My son is tall and thin like his daddy and like my brothers. It’s noting to do with lack of food.
i agree. you should ask your babys doctor what he/she says about that. I personaly think that the jar & pureed food is basicly the same thing. ONly, if your gunna puree a bunch a fresh veggies together, make sure you add in water to make it turn in to a sort of mush, altho im pretty sure you knew that anyway. so yea, do the doctor thing… =]
This isn’t a direct answer to your question, but I hope my experience helps. My daughter really slowed down in gaining weight at 6 months because I introduced solid food. I talked with a nutritionist and she said right now she is just getting used to eating solids, but does not get nutritional value from the foods yet. She loved eating the solids, so she wasn’t taking in as much breast milk as really needed. When we saw the doctor, he reiterated what the nutritionist said.
Now I can see that my daughter is just a lot more skinny than other kids her age. She’s 19 months, and the doctor is not concerned about her weight gain, so I have to keep telling myself to not worry. I would encourage you to talk to his pediatrician, and then relay information on to your parents if need be. (ie: thanks for your concern, I know you love him too. I talked with his pediatrician, and although he’s in the __ percentile, my doctor said not to push solids, and not worry about weight gain.)
I really don’t think its a matter of baby food from a jar or homemade. They get the fat from milk, and that’s where the weight will come from. (and my daughter hated the texture of homemade food, so had to buy food just so she’d eat.)
Has anyone actually tried baby food? EWWWW. I have always made my son his own food and started him with mashed vegies like potato, sweet pot, carrots, pumpkin, avocado, banana, spinach, apple, pear, peach. For breakfast I used to mix rice cereal with breast milk/boiled water/ or cows milk and then mix in some banana – he loved it. It doesnt take long to prepare and as far as I am concerned I know what my son is eating. I dont think jar food is that bad, he has had it once and actually ate it, but I want him to start eating REAL food as soon possible and get him into the habit of eating healthy fruit and vegies rather than thinking stuff from a tin or jar or can or box is what he should be eating!
