Are all vegetarians/vegans one day going to be wiped out due to lack of nutrition?
Protein from animal sources (meat, fish, dairy products, egg white) is considered high biological value protein or a “complete” protein because all nine essential amino acids are present in these proteins. An exception to this rule is collagen-derived gelatin which is lacking in tryptophan.
Plant sources of protein (grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds) generally do not contain sufficient amounts of one or more of the essential amino acids. Thus protein synthesis can occur only to the extent that the limiting amino acids are available. These proteins are considered to have intermediate biological value or to be partially complete because, although consumed alone they do not meet the requirements for essential amino acids, they can be combined to provide amounts and proportions of essential amino acids equivalent to high biological proteins from animal sources.
Plants that are entirely lacking in essential amino acids are considered incomplete proteins or sources of low biological value protein. These sources include most fruits and vegetables. A low biological value means that it is difficult or impossible to compensate for insufficient amounts of essential amino acids by combining different sources as with partially complete proteins.
Now comes the fun part. If you have an essential amino acid deficiency your body your body needs to get the essentials aminos from somewhere – your body begins to cannabilise itself. This leads to a condition known as Protein-Energy Malnutrition (PEM)
PEM has the following clinical features: weight loss, diarrhea, loss of lean body mass, muscle weakness, depigmented hair and skin, pressure sores, and depressed immune function.
WOW! Healthy now aren’t we?

i hope not my boyfriend is vegetarian..:(
Nope, eventually were going to start eating humans…. right after we eat tofu.
You have lost your mind hun.
i doubt it. vegetarianism is nothing new, and we would have seen this “dying of” already if this were the case.
You know what? I will probably get a lot of thumbs down about what i’ m about to say but I don’t care! First off, I completely agree with you. I don’t see why vegans/vegetarians always bash our eating habits when theirs is just as bad! Humans have always eaten meat and I don’t see why we should just stop now. I don’t see why people got vegan/vegetarian just to save the animals either. I mean animals are always going to be killed for their meat. Do you really think if you, only one person, stops eating meat that’s really going to help anything? I also think that if you have to take a flipping protein supplement everyday, then obviously you are doing something wrong because that is just sick!
Are all ignorant uneducated people such as yourself one day going to be wiped out due to all the chemicals, hormones, illnesses and filth in meat? I sure hope so. Do some freakin research before you come post on here.
I know no matter what I say you will just believe what you want to, and thats fine. But I have been a healthy vegetarian for one year, and i plan to stay this way forever, no matter what anyone else tells me. Its a personal choice, and belief. I feel very strongly about it.
When I first turned vegetarian over a year ago I immediately lost 30lbs. My doctor said I looked fantastic and wanted to know my secret.I also went to a family reunion and they all said the same thing. How fantastic I looked. People I havent seen in years asked if i lost weight, and I’m actually heavier than I was when i knew them! I havent been sick once since i turned vegetarian. My insomnia is cleared, depression is gone, and I have a better, happier take on life.
Lately, I am expirimenting being vegan and its only getting better.
Oh yeah just to let you know, animal protien also contains the fat in which causes colon cancer, heart disease and kidney stones. You are more likely to see an overwieght omnivore than an overweight vegetarian because vegetarians usually eat a variety of foods including tons of fruits and veggies, While a meat eater will probably just grab something high in fat, usually a meat meal.
And again… nuts and beans contain plenty of protien. read the packages.
Damn, I hope not… or else I would look like an undead pirate by now. Haha
Look, I know you have this big list of health issue, but that doesn’t really mean jack shit to someone who’s been a vegetarian their whole life and is healthy as ever. Give up the dream sister… I’m perfectly fine the way I am.
Every essential amino acid we need is available from plant sources. The idea that we need “complete” proteins either from meat or from mixing certain foods together is a myth that has been disproven.
The only people in first world countries like America that have trouble with protein deficiency are people with eating disorders or people in poverty.
orly? Then why am I in good health, good shape, athletic, have nice skin and hair, almost never get sick, and have energy? Why do so many of my meat-eating friends and family have weight problems and get sick so much more than I?
My wife is a Registered Dietitian with a Masters in Nutrution and a license to provide nutrition counseling working closely with doctors and other health care professionals.
We are both vegetarians.
What are your qualifications? Anyone can type a bunch of misinformation.
Really? Donald Watson, the founder of veganism, went veg at 15, vegan in his 30s, and lived to 95. There are even vegan athletes; Google vegan athlete, you’ll see.
All foods have the essential amino acids, and as long as we eat a variety of fruits, vegetables, grains, beans, and nuts, we will get all amino acids, DEAR.
I actually am pretty healthy. I can donate blood, as my hemoglobin is above the minimum. If I’m pale, it’s because I try to avoid excess sunlight (just enough to get my vitamin D for the day).
What are you, a lobbyist for the American Meat Institute?
No. Vegans can get all the nutrition they need by mixing different types of vegetable proteins. Some of us also eat milk products or fish to supplement protein loss. Nice work!
Let’s see your source. Biased much?
I’m a healthy vegetarian, and all vegetarians and vegans I’ve met have been very healthy. You know there are other ways to get protein, right? Do some research.
OH…………..is that why we live longer, and lack major percentages of cancer and impotence cases? Why my stomach ulcers have healed and my stomach disorders have ceased? Ignoraaant. Stop copying and pasting things that vicious meat eaters write in defensiveness because they are addicted to eating carcasses. EWWWWWWWWW DISGUSTING!!!!
Educate yourself on nutrition for the love of god.
“Plant sources of protein…generally do not contain sufficient amounts of one or more of the essential amino acids.”
not true. Brown rice is a complete protein, quinoa, a nutritious brazilian grain used as a staple of people in the amazon for thousands of years is a complete protein, acai berry is almost a complete protein, and soy is a complete protein.
Well it is clearly wrong – we obviously do get enough protein/amino acids from plant sources as we don’t all have PEM. How would you explain the growth of my children, now vegan for 8 years/nearly 1/2 a lifetime and growing normally in this time. Explain how I am overweight.
This is incorrect, misleading, a lie
Vegan sources of complete protein: quinoa, avocado, amaranth, buckwheat, hemp seed, and fermented soy.
Groups like the American Heart Association not only suggest that we are getting too MUCH protein from the Standard American Diet, but also too much saturated fat and cholesterol.
Also, there are a host of vegan bodybuilders, so I don’t think that they’re deficient in their amino acids like you suggest they could be, and there are many people who are vegans for years (Donald Watson, anyone?) and they don’t ever suffer from PEM. In fact, Donald Watson lived into his nineties.
Troll harder next time, thanks.
And here are pictures of some vegan bodybuilders while I’m at it:
Those guys look a lot healthier than the average omnivore I see. This just proves that a well-rounded diet of any kind can produce good or bad results. You need to eat well and exercise regularly. Eating meat in and of itself won’t make you healthy.
proiten shake
No! Protein and all that crap comes from things other than just meat.
If you eat too much meat then you get too much protein and too much protein is not good for you! Meat is also more difficult to digest. Meat is also high in fat and calories so unless your planing on exercising then your most likely not going to stay fit for long. Oh and those artificial hormones, steroids, and other chemicals injected or fed to the animal to make them grow faster/bigger/healthier (healthier?) don’t do us humans any good at all; they are toxic.
India has the largest Vegetarian population in the world and they have over a billion people. They seem to be doing alright and not dying as a country.
there is a man in california who is 94, a heart surgeon, and a lifelong vegetarian. enough said. so while you are on your soap box grab your laptop and do some actual research, statistically vegetarians live longer, have a significant reduced risk of heart disease and cancer, have more energy, higher sex drives, and it is a well known fact that red meat although makes you taller greatly increases your risk of cancer. and have you noticed that the most healthiest people who are in shape are vegetarians everyone knows that. any board certified nutritionist can tell you this, it is kind of their job.
Since vegetarians have been around for eons and this condition is more often found in elderly malnourished individuals your argument is weak at best. A properly balanced vegetarian diet comprised of legumes, fruits, vegetables and grains is sufficient for health and development. AS with any dietary lifestyle improper portioning or neglect of a food source can lead to deficiency. You should visit VegWeb.com to better acquaint yourself with the truth of vegetarianism.
