allergies in children?
When doctors say to keep Soy, PB and stuff away from kids, does that mean the oils also? Reason I ask is cause I have a 14 month old daughter with allergies and is on Zyrtec and the doctor said to keep her away from Soy, Fish and PB till we can do an official allergy test on her. Well, when you read ingredients on the box, it says in bold letters CONTAINS: SOY. Ok, I would keep her away from that. How about where it lists the ingredients and it says soy oil or soybean oil. Is that the same thing? Cause on Goldfish and even some of the Gerber snacks, is has the oils. What do I do in that case? She is ok for Milk , wheat and even eggs. She is on whole milk and has had bread before and even eggs and is fine.
Thank you to all who answered but I did alittle more research cause everyone’s answers told me both- stay away or she can eat the oils. Here is what I found out:
Avoiding products made with soy is difficult. Soybeans have become a major part of processed food products in our country. Soybeans and soybean products are found in baked goods, canned tuna, cereals, crackers, infant formulas, sauces, and soups.
In the processing of most soybean oils, the protein portion is removed. Studies have shown that most people with a soy allergy may safely eat soy lecithin and soybean oil.
Since we do not know for sure if she is allergic to anything, I am going to continue as is. Stay away from Soy itself but the oils are alright.
And to answer the question about why my daughter is on allergy medication this young…. I wanted it. She is miserable this time of year. Whould you like to go around sneezing, coughing, eyes watering, nose running 24/7. Probably not.

Yes, you have to exclude oils as well. Better safe than sorry until you get a definite diagnosis. You may want to flex your baking muscles for the time being!
Yes. Keep her away from soy bean oil (which is in nearly everything)
You will want to read lables very carefully.
For time being I’d keep her away from anything soy just to make sure. Even the oils. I’d also call your doctor’s office tomorrow to clarify, probably a nurse could pull your daughter’s file and tell you either way.
And, I’d keep her away from all nuts if it was me. My son also has egg allergies…and strawberry/rasberry allergies. So, I know how hard it is
(
Also, read up on her vaccines before she gets them. I just found out that the MMR is made from egg protiens and my son had a bad reaction to the vaccine. These things tend to be similar in siblings also. So, follow the same regime for your other children…until they can do the allergy test.
Good luck momma!
14 months old is alittle young to be put on allergy meds… why didn’t he wait until after he did the test to see what she was allergic to? You are not giving her body any time to develop an immunity to these things she’s allergic to. Please see a different Dr. and make sure your not ruining her immune system causing her a life time of be allergic to many other things. A few sniffles and sneezes are not a reason to not to go to the Dr. but don’t let your Dr. put your kid on every med. they suggest without doing some research yourself. Your child has to be able to develop a full immune to things on there own… which doesn’t happen until about age 6.
Oils DO NOT need to be included! The oils are cooked at such high temperatures that the protein your child is allergic to are cooked OUT of the product! My child just outgrew allergies to dairy, soy, citrus fruits and fish and I run a Yahoo Group all about kids with food allergies! Please do not needlessly exclude these foods from your child’s diet. It is already limited enough
Yes stay away from the OILS too. Oils are the still the product. Soy is in tons of things so read labels carefully.
