A baby bottle nipple question (and a special note to “Tracy M” and “Andrew’s Mommy”?

I am asking my question again because I didn’t get many responses and I added another question to it. Did any of you ever give your baby a bottle and find the nipple on top had no hole in it? I just had this happen with my daughter. Poor little thing was sucking and sucking and the juice level wasn’t going down so I tried it myself and there was no hole in the nipple! Has anyone else ever had this happen? Also, if you were out someplace and unable to get another nipple and this happened, would you puncture a hole in it yourself? Now before I get a lecture on how puncturing a hole in the top of a nipple is horrible and can cause the nipple to tear and cause choking, yada yada yada… I am talking about in a situation where you are out someplace and all you have is one nipple. I know that is you burn the tip of a needle or safety pin and when it is super hot you peirce the nipple the outsides of the hole will be melted/sealed so there will be no tearing. Would you do it? Just curious?

Thanks for your answers and Cheers all!

On a side note, I just asked a similar question about whether or not any of you have ever come accross a baby bottle nipple without a hole in the top and I got a bunch of info I don’t need about babies not being supposed to drink juice! First of all, my baby is 8 months old and her pediatrician has recommended I start giving her 3-6 oz of juice throughout the day. The juice in the bottle I was referring to was Beechnut Stages Banana Yogurt Juice http://www.beechnut.com/Our%20Baby%20Food/product.asp?P=38788&Category=2&SearchValue=8&SearchVals=Juices%20and%20Waters&ListValue=2&SearchType=By%20Product%20Type&ProdType= I give her half of a 6 oz bottle of the stuff once a day or every other day. She never gets more than 6 oz of any juice a day. I know full well all the pros and cons of juices and babies. I do my research thank you! Besides, I brush my daughter’s 3 1/2 teeth at least twice a day. So, to Tracy M. and Andrew’s Mommy, please next time I ask a question and you feel like answering it, stick to the question I asked. Furthermore, you should NOT assume things about the person asking the question. I did not mention my daughter’s age or the type of juice, etc because it was not relevant to the question! If I want information about how to feed my child I will ask that question!

Amanda – I would return it but I bought it a while ago and I’m not even sure where now… definitey don’t have the receipt. When I buy the nipples I usually scrub them all with soap and hot water then boil the heck out of em then put them up in the cabinet in a ziploc and don’t use them till the time comes. Otherwise it was a good idea, LOL
To **))**, that’s a good Idea. I should call the company! Thanks!
Thanks Sugerbear. SOmetimes you just have to tell someone what’s up… ya know?

I’ve never had the no hole thing happen – but I would probably pierce it, too. It’s so unlikely that it’s going to tear and choke the baby and it would just be for an hour or two.

Hey, let the thumbs down begin – yes if there was no other way of getting a new teat or nipple, I would do it myself. But I dont smoke so never have a lighter and dont carry pins around so im guessing I would be fkd!!! Lol. I hate it when you ask a question and people go off the track or just assume… grrrr. Happens alot on Y!A

I read your first question too and couldn’t understand why people got so hung up on the juice issue ! You asked about nipples with no holes in them………….

Have you contacted the manufacturer? It was obviously a factory fault – there may be others that slipped through that they need to know about. You may find they offer to replace / refund / supply free more teats / nipples which whould be nice.

I didn’t respond to your first question but I had to say something now in support of you.

** Ladies / gents – just answer the question – everyone has their own reasons for doing things and unless you have all the info / background details none of us are in aposition to judge. **

No, I still wouldn’t try to make a hole myself. This is why you carry extra bottles and nipples, for cases such as this!

I don’t see why you’re calling out other members, though. Everyone gets nasty on here now and then(I’m not sure what they said, I didn’t see your question) but if we all ranted about it that’s all the board would be filled with. Let it go.

I have pierced my own holes in nipples before and nothing bad has ever happened

why dont you return it to the store? they should let you exchange it fier a new one. thats what i would do. OH…i see if you were out and couldnt get another nipple, then yes i would puncture it. no big deal. just as long as there were no pieces that would break off =)

THEN return it to the store…

I have had that happen before too, and yes I have punctured a hole in it with a needle. Just make sure after it doesn’t drip too fast.

And bravo to you for letting Tracy M and Andrew’s mommy have a piece of your mind!!

actually, i have had it happen. and you know what i did? i poked a hole in it myself with my earring! so ha! bring on the thumbs down but my baby was hungry and it was all i had. and guess what else? she’s still alive and well now almost 4 years later! who would’ve thought! and i also hate it when people answer questions like that. they need to stick to whats asked and not try to ridicule you for something else.

I thought you were reffering to me when it said “Andrews mommy” lol I was like What the heck???

But I guess i’m not the only mother of an Andrew, Damn I thought I was the only one.

Anyway, In regards to your question, When something is faulty, call up the manufacturer and make a complaint, I actually made a complaint this morning about a cold teething ring that you keep in the fridge- It actually leaked! Luckily I hadnt given it to Andrew yet!

Plus you will most likely get free stuff as an apology from them and Its a good way to let off some steam If your angry about it : )

Goodluck

No, I’ve never found a nipple that has no hole. I think that it is a problem you definitely should have found *before* your baby was drinking from the bottle, though. I mean, you are supposed to inspect the bottle, nipple included, every washing to make sure that everything is fine. It’s kind of irresponsible to not check everything you have before becoming in a situation where you have no other option. Besides, who actually goes out with a baby and only one bottle that have not even checked to see if it is defective? I know it’s a hypothetical situation, but that would be a pretty lousy way to be prepared.

You’re really defensive, aren’t you? It doesn’t matter than your baby is 8 months old or that your pediatrician recommended starting juice. Pediatricians are not nutritionists, know very little about infant nutrition, and juice is basically junk. There is no benefit to it that a baby needs. Don’t tell me that you are correct just because your feelings are hurt.

Atlas,
I think the folks who said stuff about juice weren’t necessary dissing your giving your daughter juice but rather giving it to her in a bottle. I have heard (but to each their own) that any liquid other than milk should be given in something other than a bottle. That way, babies know milk comes in a bottle. It helps with weaning from formula/breastmilk when the time comes if they associate juice/water, etc with something other than a bottle.
As for the hole in the nipple, that sucks! I’m not sure what I would do. I’d be too afraid to puncture a bigger hole than necessary so maybe I would feed from a spoon instead? I know it would take a LOT longer but that’s what I would do. Hope this helps

Some people are REALLY wacky on this board. Like if you don’t do things exactly their way you are bad, evil and your child will, of course, grow up to be a Serial killer. lol

I though the mom who said she used an earring was really funny, that’s something I would totally do.

I actually never had that happen, but if I were out and about and it happened I’d find a way to get a hole in that bottle.

Especially for an 8 month old, with a newborn I’d be too afraid of making the hole too big and would probably stop at a store then get some boiling water at a 7-11 to make sure it was as clean as you can while on the road. But for an 8 month old you’re fine.
